Battle of the Super Juices: Men’s Journal and MonaVie 7
Recently Men’s Journal ran an article comparing just some of the competing super juices in an article titled: “Super Juices on Trial”. I know it caused a bit of a stir because the very popular MonaVie appears to have not faired so well in this test:
Packaged in a high-end-looking wine bottle, MonaVie tested extremely low in anthocyanins and phenolics. Even apple juice (which also tested poorly) has more phenolics than this Utah-based company’s juice. Plus, MonaVie’s vitamin C level was five times lower than that of Welch’s Grape Juice. That’s not many nutrients, especially at $1.20 a serving.
That’s compared to Welch’s grape juice where the tests showed:
The highest level of phenolics in the bunch, plus good anthocyanins and vitamin C.
Of course unmentioned is a serving size of MonaVie is 1 oz. and a serving size of Welch’s grape juice is 8 oz. Still fair’s fair and we are comparing servings, so perhaps a serving of Welch’s does beat out MonaVie, but it also has 40 grams of sugar per serving
Moving on though, making it out quite well in the test is another MLM favorite, Vemma:
The Reality:Sky-high vitamin C levels and solid in antioxidants; the only juice that contained beta-carotene.
The takeaway? For one, Welch’s Grape Juice is an amazing value, Vemma is a potent super juice, and finally you might want to consider doubling up on your MonaVie.
I think that Men’s Journal should rewrite this article as a true comparison. Why stick Monavie Active and Kagome over to the side and pick on them with no data? Monavie Active doesn’t claim to have phenols in it Monavie Pulse does, they are labeled as plant sterols (same thing). The phytonutrient levels for all products should be given also.
The “Best for” catagory is subjective as written.
“The reality” can only be what you tested for - and it has to be uniform for every product or it invalidates your study - like this article - it means absolutely nothing - but you can always get uneducated people to believe what you read because you had a “study” done - even if it was done incorrectly.
